Classic ice cream infused with tastes of playfulness
Say hi to the striped crocodiles on the wall and get in touch with the kid in you when you come for some ice cream at Fräulein Frost
If you happen to find yourself wandering around Kreuzkölln craving some ice cream, stop by Fräulein Frost for classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, or their unique flavors like GuZiMi, and goat milk with strawberry if you are the adventurous type. This ice cream shop that has a cool name but warm atmosphere is the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday.
We sat down in the outdoor area of Fräulein Frost on a sunny Saturday afternoon with the lovely Charlotte, originally from Cologne, moved to Berlin 20 years ago to study costume design, now running this cute ice cream shop with her partner.
How did you get into ice cream making and started this store?
Charlotte: I used to work in the theatre, and it demands long hours of hard work. Since I have 2 kids, I couldn’t work in a theatre all day long anymore. I had to figure out how I can make a living and also raise the kids, so my partner and I were brainstorming, and the idea of opening an ice cream store came up, so we started this shop in 2009. I did an ice cream workshop, but for me the it’s learning by doing, trial and error that helped me figure out the process and the recipes. I have very precise ideas of how the ice cream with good quality should taste.
It’s almost been a decade since you started, how has the store evolved over the years?
C: The shop (in Neukölln) used to be half this size in the beginning, and we rented the other half and expanded 3 years later. We are in the good location at a good time because we started when all the other stores and cafes are popping up in this neighborhood and it was getting more and more lively. Later on, we opened a second store in Tempelhof, and now we have 2 full-time ice cream makers on board, but at first it was just me making all the ice cream by myself in the kitchen.
How did you come up with the flavors?
C: Sometimes it’s by accident. (Laughs) We have this flavor called GuZiMi, short for Gurke, Zitrone, Minze. (It’s cucumber, lemon and mint) When I was making cucumber ice cream, it got mixed with lemon and mint ice cream that I was also making at the time, and I actually like the taste when they are mixed together. We’ve been selling this flavor for 8 years now, and it’s one of people’s favorites.
Also, I love to eat. I like goat cheese with strawberry jam, so I made up a flavor using goat milk and strawberries, and it’s very tasty. Other times, our friends come to the shop and they give us suggestions, so they help us a lot in terms of figuring out new ideas to try.
How do you like your job as an ice cream maker comparing to a costume designer?
C: I like this job because people love eating ice cream, and it’s like you’re making people happy, even if it’s just for a short moment. Though it really is hard work when it comes to running a store. The long hours is really exhausting, and you have to look for good ingredients for the ice cream, then finding the right people to work together. Besides, we made a lot of friends over the years since we’ve had the shop, and when they come, we’ll just talk about ice cream and we love it.
What do you like about Berlin?
C: I would say the diversity of people. People from all cultures come together here in Berlin, and you have the freedom to do what you want to do. You can try things, fail, dress in whatever you like and nobody cares, well maybe some do, but nobody judges you. (Chuckles)
What’s something you’re excited about lately?
C: I just ordered vanilla beans, and this is very special to me because I love vanilla! Though the price of vanilla beans just exploded recently. 1 kilogram of vanilla beans costs around 600 to 700 Euros, and you can’t make a lot of ice cream from that. However, I’m excited I have the vanilla beans now so I can make my favorite ice cream! (Laughs)
